After trading places all week long, King Kong edged out The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe for the top position in the four-day Christmas-weekend box office, the Associated Press reported.
A Sunday-night surge gave King Kong what it needed to regain first place in the Friday-through-Monday period, with $31.4 million, surpassing Chronicles of Narnia’s estimated $30.1 million, the wire service reported.
Kong, which cost $207 million to make, has taken in a modest total of $118.7 million after 12 days. Narnia’s 17-day take was $163.5 million.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, now in its sixth week of release, rounded out the top 10 with a four-day tally of $5.7 million. Its North America box-office take is now $262.4 million.

King kong cost a ton of money to make. I doubt it will recover entirely in the box office what they spent but on DVD it will explode I am sure. Many people are not willing to sit in theaters for 3 hours and are waiting for the dvd. Myself included. After merchandising and the many DVD versions they will do well I am confident.
