Sci-Fi becomes SyFy... is it a good move?

A few days ago, Sci-Fi Channel rebranded to SyFy in an attempt to rejuvinate and no doubt appeal to a younger audience.

Since it’s been doing this for a while however, the next rebrand will probably target an audience of infants and unborn children. Rest assured, Sci-Fi Heaven will not become SyFy anything.

I think it’s awful and crass. ‘SciFi’ is short for Science Fiction – that’s established and intuitive and plain to see. ‘SyFy’ means nothing. It’s not an abbreviation, or an acronym or anything like that. Now, granted, it doesn’t have to be, but I fail to see the point of the change. If it’s in an effort to be ‘trendy’ and ‘hip’ and ‘happening’ (sorry) then they’ve got their priorities all wrong. THEY’RE A SCIENCE-FICTION CHANNEL! They should be concentrating on airing and producing top quality science fiction, not doing the equivalent of getting a trendy indie hair cut to try and appeal to people who truly don’t care about the shows and films.

You won’t pull in any extra viewers by changing your name in an effort to be ‘trendy’ or ‘edgy’. You need to do that be ensuring your programmes are top quality. If you build it, they will come!

Except SciFi/SyFy hasn’t been a real science fiction channel in a while. They’re all about fake ghosts, pranks, and wrestling now with a few hours of science fiction (Eureka, Warehouse 13–and how long will that last?) thrown in.
