Apologies for the recent site downtime.

This was due to a technical error at our hosts who were migrating servers.  At some point during this process, several database user permissions were lost.

These have  now been repaired, and the site is fully functional once again.

James Cameron’s latest blockbuster Avatar was always going to be a box office success.  However, the extent to which its zipping up through the all-time records is striking.

According to a report at Sci-Fi Wire, Avatar’s domestic total is now $352.1 million, with a box-office haul worldwide of more than $1 billion.  Only four other movies have achieved this feat: Titanic, the Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and The Dark Knight.

The Dark Knight only crept up past the billion-dollar mark towards the very end of its run.  Avatar still has significant time at the box office to bring in more money.

Adjusted for inflation, Titanic took $241 million in 17 days.  Avatar has taken £352.1 million.  Could an out-and-out sci-fi movie take the coveted highest grossing movie of all time berth?  Time will tell, but the signs are good.

Apologies for any annoyance caused by our downtime this evening.  The site went down shortly after midnight BST due to a WordPress tweak going catastrophically wrong. 

Thankfully, Sci-Fi Heaven’s Emergency Technical Response Team responded with Skype-Powered Recovery Plan B, and restored the site to full working order within an hour.

I’d like to apologise for the absolute drought of updates plaguing SFH in the last fortnight.  This is in no small part due to my moving house (indeed, actually moving country).

The process is now complete, and for the most part I’m now opening hailing frequencies from sunny Durham, in the north of England (see picture).

Now that the transition is smoothly complete, I’m hoping to get back into the groove here with regular updates and often unwanted opinions.

This is just the kind of clear-the-air update I really, really want Guns N’ Roses to make re: the supposed upcoming release of Chinese Democracy late-November.  Please, Axl, if you’re reading: follow my example.
